September is always one of the hottest months in Los Angeles, but that hasn’t stopped me from dreaming about fall outfits. Since our weather is so up and down well into November, I like to look for fall pieces that I can wear now and later. Today I’m styling this green utility jacket from Madewell and giving you two outfit ideas – one for now and one for later.
What I’m Wearing: Green Utility Jacket | Brown Belt | Brown Bag | Polka Dot Dress (similar) | Slides | Sunglasses | Striped Tee | Black Jeans | Black Sneakers
Utility Jacket Outfit Ideas
Lightweight jackets are always great transitional pieces. Since this particular jacket is more of a shirt style, you can wear it as a top layer when it’s warmer or wear it as one of multiple layers when it’s cold. The muted green basically acts as a neutral; you can see in the two outfits here that the color goes with black and brown.
SIZE NOTE: I took my normal size in this, a small. This shirt jacket is definitely oversized, so I wanted to keep that silhouette. If you’d like it more fitted you can definitely size down and still have some room. I easily could have ordered an XS.
Wear Now
This utility jacket outfit for now is super easy and comfy. I simply threw is over a white dress, then belted it to define my waist so everything wasn’t just hanging on me. This exact dress is from an Amazon Drop collection, so it’s sold out. I found two similar versions though here and here.
My belt is from Madewell. I love it because the holes go all the way around the belt, so you can wear it around your waist or at your hips. As long as you get the right size for your hips (since that’s bigger) you can wear it around your waist.
I bought these Chloe slides earlier this year. They’re definitely a splurge, but I’d been looking for more elevated looking sandals that weren’t just flip flops for years. These sandals go in and out of stock so quickly, but if you’re persistent and keep checking, you’re bound to fine your size. I linked a few different stores that sell them. They come in other colors, but I felt that this combo was the most neutral. The reviews are all over the place on these, but I took my normal size (I have regular width feet), and don’t find them uncomfortable.
Matt got me this mini brown crossbody (also by Chloe) years ago and it’s still one of my go-to bags. Although tiny, it fits everything I need including my phone. I love that it’s not too fancy or casual.
Wear Later
When it finally cools down, I’ll wear this utility jacket open, then swap my dress for some fall staples. You can’t go wrong with an easy striped tee, black Converse sneakers, and a pair of jeans.
I recently discovered Everlane jeans and I love them. This is the 90s Cheeky (under $100!) and they remind me a lot of Levi’s 501s. Levi’s jeans have never fit me well despite trying numerous pairs over the years, so I was ecstatic to find a similar style to 501s that actually, well – fits.
SIZE NOTE: I’m wearing a size 27 ankle, which is my normal size for rigid, non-stretch denim. I love that Everlane has ankle options, so I don’t have to hem my jeans! I’m 5’4” for reference.
The look with the jeans is my go to vibe. Loving how you styled it. And need that perfect rusty striped top! I’m always wanting to do fun layers with dresses but I always feel like a blob. This looks SO nice on you.
