Travel Wardrobe Essentials: 15 Pieces I Always Pack

Living between Los Angeles and New York over the last several years (along with a penchant for frequent travel) has forced me to greatly rethink my approach to packing. When you’re constantly moving between climates, schedules, and settings, you don’t have the luxury of overpacking or second-guessing your clothing items. Everything needs to earn its place.

Over time, I’ve narrowed down my suitcase essentials to a core group of key pieces I rely on again and again. They’re versatile, easy to style timeless basics that work across a range of situations, regardless of your personal style. Some trips call for every item, while others require just a few pieces or seasonal adjustments. Having a collection of go-to travel pieces I defer to hasn’t just only made my packing less stressful. I also return from my trips with pieces I’ve actually utilized versus a pile of clothes I didn’t wear.

If you have any upcoming trips planned, these are the wardrobe travel essentials pieces I always come back to that makes getting dressed on the go feel simple, polished, and familiar wherever I am.

The Travel Uniform I Always Wear

When it comes to travel clothes, I’ve found that having a consistent outfit formula makes all the difference. Rather than overthinking what to wear to the airport or trying to plan something new each time, I rely on a simple uniform I know will be comfortable, functional, and still feel like me.

My travel uniform is built around comfort, layering, and ease, with pieces that can adapt to different temperatures and long hours in transit:

This is an airport outfit formula I come back to every time. It’s simple, functional, and casually polished without requiring much thought.

Tops I Always Pack

Basic Tees

The perfect starting point to this list of travel wardrobe essentials is this: well-fitting tees. They serve as the foundation for almost every outfit and are easy to layer, effortless on their own, and comfortable enough for long travel days.

I pack at least one white t-shirt and one black t-shirt. I also prefer to bring cotton styles on my trips, as the natural material makes for a more breathable shirt, especially when I’m out and about all day.

My personal favorites include this boxy easy cut tee and this oversized drapey style. For something a little more elevated, this thicker Pima cotton tee is also in my packing rotation.

White Button-Down Shirt

A crisp white button-down shirt is a timeless wardrobe staple, and one of the most versatile pieces in my travel wardrobe. It can be worn open over a tank, tucked into trousers or jeans for a polished look, or styled untucked with denim for a casual feel, making it easy to rewear throughout a trip without feeling repetitive.

Lightweight Sweater

I never travel without a lightweight sweater, even in the summer.

You never know when unpredictable temperatures can hit, and it’s always a good idea to travel with an easy layer you can toss into a bag or throw over your shoulders when you don’t need it. Bonus points: I love wearing a sweater over my shoulders or around my waist. It’s one of my favorite styling tips to help make an otherwise simple outfit feel a bit more considered.

For cooler months I’ll opt for a lightweight cashmere sweater, and in warmer months I’ll transition to a cotton sweater for breathability.

Bottoms I Always Pack

Classic Denim

I am a denim girlie through and through, and I will never pack a suitcase without a pair of jeans that make me feel great.

Generally, a straight-leg pair that hits at or just above the ankle is timeless, easy to dress up or down, and works with a variety of shoe styles and various occasions. For a casual or short trip, I’ll often swap in a trendier barrel style for a slightly more fashion-forward look instead.

Tailored Trousers

However, for as much as I love my jeans, I will also always pack a second pair of pants: tailored trousers.

Tailored trousers instantly elevate any outfit while still feeling comfortable enough for all-day wear. And hear me out, they’re the perfect pants to wear after overindulging in a vacation diet where jeans sound anything but feasible.

These are year-round staples for me, and in the summer, I gravitate toward lightweight fabrics like crepette or linen. You can’t go wrong with black pants here; they instantly dress up any outfit regardless of the fabric or season.

Personal favorites are these from Aritzia, as well as this drawstring style.

Dresses & Layers

An Easy Dress

Ninety percent of the time, this is a simple black slip dress. It works across every season: on its own with sandals in the summer; with a blazer and flats in spring and fall; or layered with tights, boots, and a coat in winter.

A slip dress also takes up virtually no space in your suitcase, making it one of my favorite pieces to easily squeeze into a gap or corner.

Outerwear

I always pack one timeless jacket that can be dressed up or down. Whether it’s a trench coat, long wool coat, or a blazer, I prioritize classic styles over trend-driven pieces for maximum versatility.

Here’s what I typically pack by season:

Of course, be sure to check the weather forecast to help gauge which outerwear piece you actually pack. There’s always that one random week with uncharacteristically colder or hotter weather!

Shoes I Always Travel With

Shoes can take up so much space in your suitcase, and I have found that no matter how many pairs I pack, I really default to only wearing three styles.

Comfortable Sneakers

Reliable, comfortable walking shoes are always a must for travel, and for me a pair of sneakers is non-negotiable. They need to be comfortable enough for long days of walking while still feeling streamlined enough to pair with more polished outfits. Adidas Samba sneakers are currently my shoe of choice here, as they go with sneakers, midi skirts and dresses, and wide leg trousers.

I wear these on the plane to avoid packing any unnecessary extra pairs of shoes.

Versatile Flats

I like to always pack a versatile flat when I travel. Ballet flats, loafers, or elevated sandals (depending on the season) are perfect for bridging the gap between casual and dressy without sacrificing comfort.

A few favorites include:

This is THE perfect shoe choice for a fancy lunch, an afternoon of shopping, or a visit to a museum where you’ll be walking but want to wear something nicer than sneakers.

Walkable Heels

For long trips where I may make a spontaneous dinner reservation or add a dressed-up moment to my agenda, I’ll pack one minimal, walkable heel.

The key is choosing a pair that feels as wearable as it looks, with a simple silhouette that works across outfit choices.

A sleek, low, pointed toe heel like this never goes out of style. For colder months, I always bring these block heel boots. I’ve worn them walking several blocks between New York, Paris, and London and have never had any issues. (Which is a big deal, considering I am not a big heels person.)

Accessories That Elevate Every Outfit

Leather Belt

A simple leather belt is an easy way to add structure and polish to even the most basic outfits. I always pack one to wear if I feel like my outfit feels a little unfinished. This slim leather belt has been a closet staple of mine for years.

Sunglasses

A good pair of sunglasses instantly pulls a look together while also being practical for long days out. They’re also a great accessory for international trips when hiding jet lag.

Goes-with-Everything Handbag

To better utilize packing space, I focus on bringing a bag with a little bit of structure that works for both day and night. A bag like this elevates casual outfits but still feels appropriate for dinner, making it a highly versatile accessory.

This minimalist leather bag has a zip top to keep your essentials safe and an adjustable leather strap. It’s also available in a smaller version here.

Compact Travel Steamer

The secret to making travel clothing look less… travel clothing-y? Remove the wrinkles. Nothing says “I just took this from my suitcase” more than grid folds on your pants and shirts. Removing wrinkles is an instant way to make your pieces look more polished.

This compact travel steamer comes with me whenever I travel, especially on international trips. It’s dual-voltage so works internationally as well, provided you have an outlet adapter.

Although most hotels have ironing boards, it’s less bulky and quicker to give your pieces a quick steam before heading out the door. And even if your vacation rental lists a steamer in the amenities section, it’s still a good idea to pack your own. There’s been more than one occasions where the steamer was nowhere to be found, so I learned my lesson quickly with this.

How I Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Stick to a Neutral Color Scheme

You will see me write this in nearly every travel post: a neutral, cohesive color palette is the foundation of any travel wardrobe. When everything works within the same range (e.g. black, white, beige, gray, and navy) it becomes much easier to mix and match pieces without overthinking things. And when a last-minute change of plan occurs, you’ll have items you can easily grab to make that one extra outfit (or two!).

Prioritize Comfort Without Sacrificing Polish

Comfort is non-negotiable for me when I’m traveling, but that doesn’t mean my outfits have to feel overly casual. I focus on pieces that are easy to move in and comfortable enough for long days, while still looking structured and intentional. The right fabrics and silhouettes make it possible to feel both relaxed and put together.

Pack for Real Life, Not Just Outfits

It’s easy to plan outfits in theory, but the key to this packing method is packing for how you’ll actually spend your time. I always start with core wardrobe essentials before layering in any accent colors, trend-driven items, or a statement piece. This ensures that everything I bring has a purpose, while still leaving room for a few fun pieces that make my travel wardrobe feel more personal and interesting.
