Linen has always been one of my favorite fabrics for this time of the year. It’s comfortable, it’s breathable, and linen clothes always look so dang effortless. Today’s post is all about linen clothes for summer. I’m rounding up some of my favorite linen pieces and sharing why linen is a must-have fabric for the heat.

What is linen?
There are lots of fabrics out there, and even as someone who loves fashion, I occasionally have to do a quick Google search on what’s what. So, here’s the skinny on what makes linen, well, linen.
- Just like cotton, linen is a natural fiber, but it’s made from flax instead of a cotton plant
- Linen has some subtle texture in it because the weave of linen is generally looser to that of cotton
- Linen has natural water-wicking qualities, meaning it draws water (or sweat) away from the body
- Due to the hallow flax fibers, linen is highly breathable and perfect for warm weather
Even linen-blend pieces work for summer, since there’s a mix of those breathable hallow fabrics in the material.

I definitely don’t own a ton of linen cloths for summer, but each year I do try to add a few staples into rotation for those days when I just need something easy and breezy:
A linen dress
This brown linen mini dress is a more fashionable take on the normally minimalist linen silhouettes. I love the dropped waist (aka SO comfy), but the cute little ties on the back sold me. (So did the price at $108).
SIZE NOTE: I’m usually between a small and medium depending on how I like things to fit. I wanted this to be comfortable so I’m wearing a medium.
A linen button-up shirt
A linen button up shirt is always a classic. Wear it alone as a top or unbutton it and wear over a tank for an extra layer. A button up linen shirt also makes for a great swimsuit cover up! I prefer these in crisp white and I like to size up for an oversized fit.
Linen Shorts
Linen shorts make a great alternative to denim shorts. I really like this pair; these shorts are a neutral hue so they’ll match everything, and the subtle stripes add a little something extra.
A Linen Tank
I love the simplicity of this button-front linen tank. It’s officially on my summer wish list. Tuck it into shorts or a maxi skirt!
