Function of Beauty Review | Custom Shampoo and Conditioner

My Honest Function of Beauty Review

There are a lot of items in my bathroom that I have used and stood by for years. A favorite mascara that gives my lashes the exact amount to length, volume, and blackness that I want? Got it. An exfoliant that has single-handedly changed my skin texture and I refuse to live without? Have that. Shampoo… is not one of these items. Sure, I’ve used different shampoos that I liked and bought again when they ran out, but purely out of necessity. Not because I loved it them so much, I had to have them.

I recently ordered custom shampoo and conditioner from Function of Beauty. Yes, you read that right. Fully personalized, based on my hair goals, needs, and personal preferences like color and scent. It’s been just over a week and I’ve gone through a few washes using my shampoo and conditioner. Today I’m sharing my honest thoughts on both products.

Thank you Function of Beauty for sponsoring this post. All views are my own.

I don’t wash my hair every day, and I need hair care products that keep my hair feeling clean in between washes and workouts.

Spoiler alert: I really, really like my products. If you want the TL;DR version of this review, scroll to the bottom of this post or click here.

How Does Function of Beauty Work?

For all product categories and products, you start by taking a quiz, which allows the company to figure out which ingredients are best for your customized formula or formulas.

The hair quiz for shampoo and conditioner contains five steps. (The 16 oz. set of shampoo and conditioner is normally $49.99, but you can save 20% by clicking here.)

Step 1: Hair Profile

Function of beauty offers products for all different hair types. Select yours, along with hair structure (fine, medium coarse) and scalp moisture.

Step 2: Hair Goals

You can select up to 5 hair goals for your hair products. These range from color protection to anti-frizz.

I selected anti-frizz, hydration, replenish hair, shine, and thermal protection as my five hair goals.

You can also select if you want silicone free formulas.

Step 3: Pick a Fragrance

Honestly, this was the hardest part for me because I’m super picky and indecisive about smells. And, let’s be honest, it’s hard to choose a fragrance based on a description alone. But, I think Function of Beauty does a pretty good job as describing them.

This is the one I went for, particularly because I wasn’t feeling too risky the day I took my hair quiz and because I’m super familiar with eucalyptus fragrances.

In the spirit of total customization, you can choose your fragrance strength or even go fragrance free if you prefer.

Step 4: Choose a Name and Color

Type in your name (or someone else if this is a gift) and choose the color of your custom shampoo and conditioner.

I went with the dye free option because I wanted white formulas that matched my bathroom, but all of the colors are really pretty, and there’s something for everyone.

Step 5: Select Your Hair Care Items

This final step allows you to purchase your customized shampoo and conditioner individually or together, select your size, and if you want a one-time purchase or a subscription.

Once you’re done, it’s time to add to cart and order. Due to the customization of Function of Beauty items, don’t expect Amazon Prime delivery speeds on your order. My custom shampoo and conditioner arrived to me in 12 days.

Is Function of Beauty Worth It?

Yes. These products work. Here’s why:

I had a lot of fun filling in my hair type information and choosing a color and fragrance. The hair quiz made me evaluate what I truly want in a shampoo and conditioner; something I only loosely did in the past when buying them off the shelf.

The Shampoo

Like I mentioned above, I’ve found shampoos that I’ve liked enough in the past. However, none have really blown be away so much that I truly loved them.

I REALLY LIKE THIS SHAMPOO.

It lathers nicely; smells delightful; and my hair feels clean in the shower and after drying it. You know when you can just feel your roots and scalp nice and fresh? That’s the feeling I’ve experienced every time I used this shampoo these past two weeks.

I use a quarter-sized amount, and despite the instructions encouraging you to rinse and repeat, I have found that I don’t have to do this and still achieve a squeaky-clean scalp.

The Conditioner

The conditioner pleasantly surprised me. I actually have a conditioner that I really love, so my standards for this were pretty high. This conditioner honestly feels just like my other, much pricier, one. And that’s saying a lot, because I really, really like that conditioner.

The formula is super creamy, but for me what is always telling about a conditioner that works for my hair is how easily I can run my fingers through it in the shower. This passes the test! Easy peasy.

My blonde ends feel hydrated, even after drying my hair. A lot of other conditioners leave my hair feeling nice and soft in the shower, but the hydration goes away once I put a dryer to it. Not the case here.

I’d say my only complaint on the conditioner is that despite it being the same eucalyptus scent as the shampoo, it somehow didn’t smell as good. A minor thing, but something I can overlook given that this is the only conditioner literally ever to deliver the same hydrating results as my other conditioner.

TL;DR – My Overall Thoughts

I definitely recommend giving Function of Beauty a try. I have been really happy with my custom shampoo and conditioner formulas, and they’ve earned a spot on my bathroom shelf. I’m happy to say I’ve finally found a shampoo that I actually love, not just one that “works.” The conditioner is also wonderful, so I’ll probably finish the other one I own and then move over to this one.

It’s normally $49.99 for a 16 oz. set of shampoo and conditioner, but you can save 20% by clicking here.

Here are some things I noticed about my hair after using Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner:
  • Even the day after washing, my hair still feels clean at the root
  • My hair seems to be less frizzy, one of the “hair goals” I marked on the hair quiz
  • My bleached ends feel hydrated, another “hair goal” I marked on the hair quiz
  • I’m able to go multiple days without washing my hair, even after hard workouts

The first time I used these products, I washed my hair on a Tuesday evening. I let it airdry overnight, then went to an intense 1-hour boxing class Wednesday night. After class, I took my hair out of its ponytail, and it didn’t look oily or greasy. The next day (Thursday!) I woke up and didn’t even to wash it. My hair felt and looked great, all it required was a few sprays of dry shampoo.

I love knowing that I don’t have to settle for a shampoo or conditioner that only addresses one or two hair concerns, and can get formulas that address exactly what I have been looking for or want. If you want your products to be silicone free, fragrance free, or dye free, you have that option.

It takes about 2 weeks to receive your order, which I’ll admit feels slow in an Amazon Prime world. But good things – especially when formulated just for you – take time. And I found that to be really worth it.
