Velvet! Okay. I’m seriously obsessed with all things velvet this season and want to buy everything in this fabric. People often think that they need to save velvet for a holiday party or Christmas dinner but I’m here today to make the argument against that.
Velvet is soft and luxe, so why save it for a party? My favorite way to wear the fabric is actually with jeans because it modernizes the fabric. Something about balancing a fancier top with an everyday item makes my heart sing, and makes velvet much more wearable.
Don’t believe me? See how I wear it with some of my closet staples.
First off, let’s start with the key piece and subject of this blog post: my velvet top. I love that the silhouette of it is more of a t-shirt than a blouse. Tops like this are great because they lend themselves to be dressed up and down. I love the drop hem on the sleeves and the cute ruffles. They add a little something without adding width to my shoulders. I sized down on this to an XS but it really depends how you want to wear it. If you want it a little on the oversized side, then stick to your usual size.

The top is slightly cropped so I paired them with these Rag & Bone high-rise blue jeans. I bought these back in July during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but they just went back on sale and still fully stocked. These were my first pair of Rag & Bone jeans and definitely won’t be my last. You must get them! One of my favorite bloggers, Jacey Duprie of Damsel in Dior, mentioned how comfortable her pair was on Instagram Stories once, so I wanted to check them out. She was not lying!
I commute an hour each way to work and usually on the car ride home I unbutton the top of my pants (sorry if that’s TMI) because I get so uncomfortable sitting in stiff denim forever. Not the case with these pants. I can’t believe I’m even saying this but I bet they could even stand a long flight. I’m sure my sweatpants would love a break. Anyway, my point is, these jeans are super comfy, high-rise, and the perfect closet staple to my new velvet top. They have a frayed hem but I cuffed them here to show off my ankles a bit.
I really wanted to make this look feel a little more cozy and complete, so I added this red flannel shirt. This exact shirt comes in a bunch of different colors and slightly different plaids. The one I have on here is called Cranberry Ink. I’m usually a small and went one size up. You can’t tell here since I’m wearing it around my waist, but the small is a little tight in the chest where it buttons which is why I grabbed a medium. I can’t think of anything more fall than a plaid shirt. I love wearing them casually when I’m too lazy to think of what to wear, but I also love dressing them up because it’s unexpected.
A casual day isn’t complete without a pair of classic white sneakers like this canvas pair by Tretorn.
Have I convinced you yet that wearing velvet during the day and casually is totally cool?
