How to Style Loafers: 11 Easy Ways to Wear Them

As much as I’m a self-proclaimed sneaker gal, there are always occasions that require another form of footwear. And when I’m looking for something equally as comfortable but more elevated than my beloved Adidas Sambas and a little less feminine than ballet flats, I reach for a pair of loafers.

Loafers are classic and versatile shoes. Regardless of ever-changing trending trends, loafers are a crowd favorite for their ability to make any outfit instantly feel more polished while simultaneously adding a tomboy-inspired touch to even the most feminine outfits. And while a certain style of loafers may be more on trend over time, in general, this shoe isn’t going anywhere.

Loafers work with many different outfits (probably a lot more than you think!), including your favorite pair of trousers, straight-leg jeans, and even skirts and dresses. Whether you’re looking to style loafers for the office or for the weekend, are my favorite ways to wear this everyday favorite.

Why Loafers Are a Closet Essential

The loafer’s history goes back to 1920s Norway, when fisherman wore casual shoes inspired by Native American moccasins they’d seen on transatlantic trips. By the 1930s, loafers gained popularity in the U.S. as a collegiate staple, and in the 1950s Gucci introduced its now-iconic horsebit loafers. By the 1960s, loafers were an integral part of mod fashion—and they’ve been a wardrobe essential ever since.

Today, loafers strike that perfect balance between polished and effortless. They elevate any outfit in a way sneakers can’t, while still being far more comfortable than heels. They’re versatile enough to wear with trousers and a blazer to the office, or jeans and a sweater on the weekend. Regardless of whether your aesthetic leans preppy, minimal, or fashion-forward, loafers  loafers are classic shoes that work across style preferences.

Another reason I consider loafers a closet essential is their practicality. In walking cities like New York or Paris, they’re the ideal “all-day” shoe. They are comfortable enough for errands or commuting, yet polished enough that you’ll never feel underdressed if plans shift. Fashion girls have been leaning into loafers for years, and they’re a constant in street style outfits because they work across seasons and with endless combinations.

Personally, I love how loafers can completely change the mood of an outfit. A chunky sole instantly makes a sweet dress feel a little cooler, while a sleek leather loafer can add refinement to relaxed denim. I also reach for them with tailored trousers when I want that effortless “borrowed from the boys” vibe.

If you invest in a great pair of loafers that fit your personality, I promise you’ll reach for them more often than you think.

How to Wear Loafers

Not sure how to style loafers? Think of them as the perfect in-between shoe. They’re more more elevated than sneakers, but less formal than heels. Here’s how to make them work with your wardrobe.

Types of Loafers to Wear

Just like sneakers or heels, loafers come in plenty of styles. Some feel preppy and classic, while different styles lean more modern and bold. The key is knowing the vibe you’re going for and picking the silhouette that best supports it. There is truly a loafer style for everyone.

Penny Loafers

The most common and versatile loafer is the penny loafer. Penny loafers are classic loafers and timeless. They’re probably what comes to mind when you picture a traditional loafer. They work with everything from straight leg jeans to trousers, making them a perfect starter loafer if you’re building your collection.

Chunky Loafers

If you want something on the trendier side that feels a little more like a fashion statement, go for a chunky loafer. With thicker soles and heavier silhouettes, these styles add a little edge and make even simple outfits look intentional. They pair well with tailored trousers or cropped pants, but I personally love them most with a skirt and socks for a playful, street-style vibe.

Heeled Loafers

Heeled loafers are less common, but they do exist! This style strikes a balance between professional and stylish, making them great for the office and super chic with wide leg trousers. However, in this post, I’m focusing on flat styles only as I prefer them.

Choosing the Right Colors and Fabrics

Just like the style of a loafer, the color and fabric can completely change the tone of your outfit. A pair of loafers in glossy patent leather feels sleek and dressy, while the same shape in soft suede or Nappa leather comes across more casual and relaxed. Paying attention to these details makes it easy to adapt loafers for different seasons and occasions.

Classic Leather

Smooth leather is super versatile. Black loafers will always feel polished and timeless and great option for the office or evening. Brown or cognac leather reads a little softer and more casual, ideal for daytime or weekend outfits.

Patent Leather or Glossy Leather

Shiny patent loafers instantly dress up an outfit. They’re great for more formal occasions or when you want to make a statement with an otherwise simple look.

Suede

Suede loafers bring texture and a touch of luxury. I love suede loafers for transitional seasons like spring and fall. It’s important to note that they aren’t made for rain or snow though, so be sure to check the weather when you wear them!

Seasonal Colors and Fabrics

  • Spring/Summer: Light neutrals like beige, cream, and off-white, or loafers with woven details feel fresh and airy for warmer months.
  • Fall/Winter: Darker tones like black, burgundy, or chocolate brown ground an outfit and pair beautifully with cozy layers. Metallic or velvet loafers are especially fun for the holidays.

Loafers with Jeans and a Trench Coat

You can’t go wrong with classic penny loafers and trench coat. This outfit is THE classic look. If you’re looking for a more traditional way to style your loafers, pair brown loafers with a pair of jeans, a striped sweater and a trench coat that feels timeless and preppy Parisian.

Loafers with a Midi Skirt

I love pairing loafers with a midi skirt. To help balance the full silhouette of the skirt, opt for chunky loafers or more hefty versions with a lug sole. A styling trick I always love to do: ankle socks! It’s a small detail but makes your outfit feel a little more intentional and complete.

Loafers with Socks and a Short Dress

Another way to wear loafers with socks is to pair your shoes with a short dress. Since you’re showing so much leg, adding socks to chunky loafers helps balance the look here.

Loafers with Sheer Socks

I love adding sheer socks to black leather loafers and some jeans. There’s something about this combination that feels elevated and fresh; the fashion industry loves this pairing thanks to the pop of skin that peeks through the sheer socks.

Denim on Denim

Denim on denim is one of those casual looks that always looks cool. You don’t have to match the denim exactly, but do try to keep the shades in the same family (ie. medium wash with medium wash, or light denim with light denim).

This denim button-down shirt has become a recent favorite, and it’s a great price point. Size up for an extra oversized fit like I did.

With an Oversized Blazer

For a smart casual look, wear your loafers with jeans and an oversized blazer. I added a striped button-down shirt to keep this outfit a little more polished, but a plain t-shirt absolutely works, too!

Let your tassel loafers be the star of your outfit; keep things simple with a plain t-shirt and a solid blazer. Be sure your jeans hit at or just above the ankle to show of your shoes!

Loafers in the Winter

It’s hard to see these loafers peeks from my trousers, but I love this tonal outfit with a slouchy coat for a cold day. If needed, upgrade your pants to wool trousers for extra warmth.

A Midi Dress and Denim Jacket

I always love thinking outside the box with loafer outfits, but this one didn’t come naturally to me. While taking photos in Paris, the photographer suggested I pair my midi dress with loafers for a quintessential Parisian look. I love it with the denim jacket and neck scarf.

For the Office

This black suit and loafers combo is a no-fail success for the office. When paired with a t-shirt, it feels appropriately business casual.

With a Slouchy Sweater

This casual yet polished outfit always does the trick. Start with an oversized button-down shirt, then add a cozy, slouchy sweater and your favorite jeans for a look that’s equal parts lived in and put together.
