Black & White Outfit: Back to Basics

Hi friend! I’m taking a break from fun spring trends to bring it back to basics. Yep, today is about a classic: the black and white outfit.

I’m going to keep this post short and sweet but let me start here. When you feel like you have nothing to wear, regardless of the season, a black and white outfit is always in style.

Today I’m sharing 3 of my favorite black jeans and 20 pretty white blouses including this darling polka dot one to create the perfect black and white ensemble.

Let’s backtrack to a couple of weeks ago to when I had just finalized my NYC travels plans. It included a lot of meetings with brands and a last minute blogger event to a Broadway show.

I scooped up some last minute stylish, but professional pieces for my meetings, but could not for the life of me find my perfect Broadway outfit. So instead of stressing myself out, I went into my closet and reached for the good old classic color combo then added a pop of red.

I have a handful of black jeans, but these three favorites are always in rotation:

Frayed Hem Skinny Jeans

These jeans by Frame are the ones I’m wearing here. The rise isn’t super high, but it’s not low either. With plenty of stretch, these are my go-to black jeans whenever I’m in NYC or on the go in general. I love the raw hem because it adds a subtle edgy feel to any look.

The High-Rise Skinny

The Maria fit by J Brand was one of the first high-rise styles I ever purchased nearly five years ago. With a super skinny ankle opening and high rise, these fit like a glove. The fabric is called “photo ready” and made to suck you in for a night out on the town. They have less stretch than my Frame jeans, but still comfortable.

100% Cotton Jeans

These AGOLDE jeans are faded just a bit and have been on heavy rotation for me this past winter! While the non-stretch fabric tends to lean a little more casual, you can still dress these up. All you need are pair of strappy sandals (mine are from ZARA!) and you’re instantly effortlessly cool with touch of fancy.

Now that you’ve got your base, it’s time to finish the look with a pretty white blouse. Don’t limit yourself to just a plain button down; subtle prints like tiny polka dots on my blouse worn here also count when it comes to a black and white outfit.

SIZE NOTE: I’m wearing a size small here and it’s a perfect, roomy fit. Don’t be afraid to splurge on silk blouses like this one; they’ll last forever.

Opt for something light like eyelet or flowy (such as silk) to transition you into spring with the contrast of dark black.
