The Pantone Color of the Year is here for 2022! It’s a dynamic periwinkle blue hue called that the Pantone Color Institute has dubbed Very Peri. You’re about to see it everywhere in fashion, and today I’m sharing how to incorporate it into different parts of your fashion lifestyle.
Pantone is a standardized color matching system used worldwide, and how brands can achieve consistency when printing and working with different vendors. Colors are inherent identifiers for a brand (Tiffany Blue, for example), and Pantone provides color standards to ensure that consistent, accurate colors are being used across fabrics, plastics, and inks.
The Pantone Color Institute studies color trends up to two years in advance, helping brands plan for shades of fabric, makeup, clothing, and beyond. Having worked in both the fashion and skin care industries myself, I can tell you what you see in stores takes months of planning. By knowing a color trend many months in advances, brands can better position themselves to have the right “it colors” when their new product finally hits the shelves.
Every year, The Pantone Color Institute releases their Pantone Color of the Year. This color reflects the current global zeitgeist and overall mood of the moment. Past colors of the year include Ultimate Gray, Classic Blue, and Living Coral. Remember back when Millennial Pink was everywhere back in 2017? It’s very close sister color, Rose Quartz, was the official Pantone Color of the Year the year prior. Very Peri and shade of purple will make major waves over the next year or so.
Pantone Color of the Year 2022: Very Peri
Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri is a brand new, custom color newly added to the Pantone color library. Very Peri is an amped up periwinkle, not too pastel, and with some exciting richness without being neon or too bold. It’s the first time Pantone has made a custom color for the Color of the Year; a nod to unprecedented times we’ve encountered over the last couple of years.
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director for the Pantone Color Institute describes the reasoning behind the new shade. “…Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family, encompassing the quality of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone… displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”
Very Peri Outfit Ideas
Thanks to its not-too-pastel-or-too-bright nature, Very Peri can be worn by everyone. Its vivifying violet red undertone and blue undertone means this color works on those with cooler and warmer skin tones. We love a universally flattering color, am I right? Here are some ideas on how to wear Very Peri, the Pantone Color of the Year 2022.
Hands down, one of my favorite ways to be bold with any color is a full monochromatic outfit.
Unless you’re buying a set, you won’t be able to perfectly match individual pieces. Look for pieces that vary in shade enough to look intentional. You can absolutely wear varying shades of Very Peri In light to dark.
For pieces that are pretty similar, focus on pairing different textures, seen above right on Aimee Song.
With The Classics
Very Peri surprisingly goes well with a variety of classics, from black and white to taupe and nude. This Very Peri color combination is definitely more for the minimalist looking to dabble into the trending color.
Pick one or two Very Peri pieces, and let those be the stars of the show by paring down the other colors in your look or accessories for a sophisticated take on the the Pantone Color of the Year.
Color All Around
For the color enthusiast, Very Peri works well with bright shades just as equally as it does with soothing ones.
Depending on what you opt for, you can make your Very Peri outfit lean more toward the pastel spectrum (perfect for spring and summer) or bolder (great for fall and winter).
For brights, consider yellows, greens, and mustard. For a more subtle approach, try lilac, dusty rose, or a muted moss tone.
Very Peri Accessories
Not into this shade for clothing? No problem. Try accessorizing with Very Peri, instead. Look for sunglasses, bags, jewelry, and even socks to add a pop of this Pantone Color of the Year to your looks.
However, the easiest (and most affordable) way to try out Very Peri is via a manicure. Essie’s Wink of Sleep is the perfect Very Peri shade. Try this color out on your nails if you’re not too sure, then take it from there!
