How to Style a Trench Coat for Spring | 5 Outfit Ideas

Spring is right around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about updating your wardrobe for the new season. One piece that can effortlessly take you from the cold winter months into the warmer spring season is the classic trench coat.

How to Style a Trench Coat for Spring

Most people probably think of the iconic Burberry trench coat when they hear, “trench coat,” but there are a lot of other great affordable styles in the mix with the same storm flaps and double-breasted details as the original. (I’m linking a handful of options in this post!) However, if you are looking to invest in high-quality wardrobe staples, you obviously can’t go wrong with Burberry.

Lightweight, breathable fabric makes a trench coat a practical choice for transitional weather. Although there are many colors of trench coats out there, I always favor the classic beige trench coat. With its timeless style and neutral color, it’s no wonder why it’s been a versatile wardrobe staple for decades. However, styling a one can be tricky once the weather starts to get warmer.

I’m sharing five outfit ideas on how to style and wear your trench coat for spring. Whether you’re dressing up for work or running errands on the weekends, I’ve got you covered. (See what I did, there?) So, grab your tan trench coat and let’s get started with these styling tips!

Styling a Trench Coat with a Dress

When it comes to wearing a trench coat with a dress, length is key. You want the hem of your dress to be visible. So choose a dress that hits below your trench coat. This will also help to elongate your legs and create a flattering silhouette. My trench coat from LOFT is the perfect length; it’s long enough to feel cool and modern. But isn’t so oversized that it swallows you whole and works well with midi dresses.

For shoes, I prefer ones that are comfy and stylish. Sneakers, sandals, or ankle boots are all great options, depending on the occasion and your personal style. I opted for white sneakers with my floral dress for a casual but polished look that can be worn all day.

Business Casual

Wearing a trench coat to work is a great way to create a business casual outfit that’s both professional and stylish. Tan looks great with black, so start with some tailored trousers and then add a blouse or t-shirt.

Add a pair of black heels to complete your monochromatic base. If you’re looking for something more comfortable, try a pair of chunky loafers like these.

Denim on Denim

If you want something a little more casual, yet equally chic, you can’t go wrong pairing your tan trench coat with denim on denim. Denim on denim is timeless, and this classic look works for casual office settings and weekend activities. (We love a multi-tasking outfit at CBC!)

To create this look, start by choosing a denim shirt, then pair it with jeans in a similar or darker wash. Sneakers are great for this easy outfit, but ankle boots also work if you want something a little more elevated. If you’re wearing skinny jeans, you can also try knee high boots with your outfit. Finally, add in pop of color with an accessory like sunglasses or a bag.

With Wide Leg Trousers

Try wearing a white button-down shirt and wide leg trousers with your trench coat. Even though the white shirt and trousers both are oversized, the trench coat adds structure and therefore balances the entire outfit.

I’m a big fan of tonal dressing. So look for pants and bags in similar tan shades to complement your trench coat. I added a pop of red lipstick to add a little something to this otherwise fully neutral look. With sneakers, this is a very effortless outfit that feels modern and on-trend.

Casual Trench Coat Outfit with Leggings

A trench coat also works for casual outfits. For a sporty vibe, style your trench coat for spring with some leggings. I’m a big fan of these black leggings because they are thicker than others I’ve tried and feel more like pants versus workout leggings.

For a street style feel, try a graphic hoodie or t-shirt, then pair with sneakers. This is an easy, relaxed outfit that’s great for those days or mornings when you want to look put together, but also just want to wear leggings and be comfy.

There you have it! Five easy trench coat outfits to try this spring. With its versatility and timelessness, a trench coat is a great investment piece that you can wear for years to come.
