“What’s your drink of choice?”
If you haven’t seen the viral Q&A video of HBO’s House of the Dragon co-stars Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy, you can watch it here.
Cooke asks her co-star about her favorite cocktail, to which D’Arcy replies “A Negroni – Sbagliato – with prosecco in it.” The flirty delivery, combined with Cooke’s excited reactions over a cocktail, caused video to go viral, and without a doubt, an increase in orders at bars across the country.
So, what exactly is a Negroni Sbagliato, and how do you make one?
The Negroni Sbagliato
What is a Negroni Sbagliato?
Sbagliato means “mistake” in Italian. The story of the Negroni Sbagliato is that in 1970, a bartender accidentally grabbed a bottle of Prosecco instead of gin when mixing up the classic Italian drink. To his delight, he created a bubbly take on the cocktail that’s been around for years.
As far as taste goes, you’ll find it easier to sip than its original counterpart, thanks to the prosecco. It’s not as strong as the classic but more alcoholic than a spritz, making it the perfect in-between ground cocktail when you want something right in the middle.
The traditional Negroni is equal parts Campari, vermouth, and gin, but a Sbagliato features prosecco instead of gin. So, if you’re not a gin fan, this drink is a great way to still enjoy the flavors of a classic Negroni.
How to Make a Negroni Sbagliato
The great thing about a Negroni Sbagliato is that it only takes four ingredients, all of which are easy to find at your local grocery store. No specialty liquors or fancy syrups here!
What you’ll need:
- Campari
- Sweet vermouth
- Prosecco or another sparkling wine of your choice
- An orange, for garnishing
Another wonderful thing about this drink is that you don’t have to remember any specialty measurements because all liquids here are a 1:1:1 ratio. If you add one ounce of Campari, you’ll add one ounce of sweet vermouth and Prosecco, too. If you add 1.5 ounces of Campari, you’ll do the same amount with the other two items. You can also adjust the ratios however you want; I personally like to add just a little more bubbly to my Negroni Sbagliato so that the ratio is more 1:1:1.5
You can make this as a single serve by the glass, or you can make a few drinks at once in a mixing glass like this one.
Serve over ice, then garnish your Negroni Sbagliato with an orange peel. Cheers!
