California Style | California is a State of Mind

California style. It’s pretty distinct. Tennis shoes, messy hair, and tan skin are all trademarks of the west coast. But you don’t have to live in California to get the look. California is a state of mind!

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite, very “SoCal summer” looks. A little bit tomboy, a little bit girly, this outfit has LA written all over it.

Awhile back on Instagram, I asked my followers to help me define my style – I am forever trying to figure out an elevator pitch for this – and so many of you said, “effortless.” I loved that! And after a quick scroll through the ol’ feed, I guess that rings pretty true to whatever I’m wearing, even if it’s still a date night look.

I have to contribute that to growing up in San Diego, where my summers in high school and college were spent hanging out on the beach and then going back to my friend Dave’s house at night once the sun went down. From beach to lunch to a nighttime hangout, all of my outfits I packed with me were easy to throw on and go. Los Angeles also has a rich beach culture, plus its history of skateboarding, which has trickled its way through the city in lively street art and bleached out hair. I know I always talk about loving New York City, but there’s really nothing like a California girl. 🙂 (And every time I go to NYC, I find myself in a real pickle trying to nail down “cool, New York City” outfits.)

My favorite outfits are the ones that are cute, but also comfortable. This easy denim skirt goes with everything and is the perfect replacement when you don’t want to wear jean shorts. This is my girly moment amongst the graphic tee and Converse sneakers. It’s not too short, which means I can sit down without really worrying about anything, and the perfect blue wash makes it a great transitional piece into fall when paired with a chunky sweater and booties. (I know it’s scorching outside so talking about fall sounds gross, but you totally can wear a denim mini into autumn.) Bonus points for it being only $55.

Los Angeles is the land of denim, and I’m sure we wear more of it than any other state. No but seriously, many of the premium denim brands you see in department stores are all based in LA. So naturally, my California style includes some kind of denim.

This sunny yellow graphic t-shirt is basically California in a nutshell, if you ask me. I’m a huge fan of graphic tees, and although at the end of the day they are really just t-shirts, a graphic tee can add interest to any “plain” outfit just by way of simply having something on it. I have too many to count, but after I found my obsession with all things mustard yellow, this one found its way into my hands.

Last but certainly not least for my California style, I finished this with my tried and true pair of Converse sneakers and a cute off-white cross body bag to keep me hands free. Don’t forget the sunnies! They’re a must year-round on the west coast!
