Most beach vacation packing lists out there are either family-oriented with tons of road trip beach gear or bulky lists of random items that will leave you thinking you need to pack everything but the kitchen sink to enjoy your time on the sand. In reality, you only need a handful of thoughtfully chosen pieces to create effortless, easy outfits for your upcoming trip. And sunscreen, of course.
As someone who grew up in San Diego 20 minutes from the water and who is a minimalist at heart, I promise you that part of the ease of a beach holiday is that you can show up with simply a swim suit and towel and have a great full day.
Over time, I’ve also refined my approach to packing for warm-weather trips down to a small edit of essentials I reach for again and again. They’re pieces that feel polished but relaxed, that transition easily from day to night, and that can be mixed and matched into multiple outfits without overthinking it.
Whether you’re heading to the South of France, a coastal European town, or another beach destination, this minimalist beach vacation packing list will help you travel lighter without sacrificing style or overpacking.
If I were leaving for my next beach vacation tomorrow, here’s what I’d be packing.

Minimalist Packing Tips for a Beach Vacation
Pack in a Color Palette
The best way to avoid overpacking is to start by building your beach vacation wardrobe around a cohesive color palette. Neutrals like white, cream, tan, and black serve as foundations, and from there you can add in one or two accents for a fun pop of color. When everything in your suitcase coordinates, you can mix and match pieces effortlessly, turning a small selection of items into multiple outfits. This helps simplify getting dressed each day, so you can spend less time in your hotel room, and more time enjoying the beautiful beach surroundings.
Prioritize Breathable Fabrics
Warm weather dressing is all about comfort, which is why breathable fabrics should be at the core of your beach trip packing list. Lightweight materials such as linen, cotton, and gauze allow for airflow and help keep you cool in heat and humidity. These fabrics also lend that relaxed, beachy vibe that feels naturally elevated, yet effortless. Choosing pieces in breathable textiles means you’ll not only look polished, but you’ll feel comfortable from all day.
Choose Pieces You Can Rewear
A minimalist packing strategy relies on selecting pieces you’ll actually want to wear more than once during your trip. Focus on versatile staples and easy to wear everyday items that can be styled in different ways throughout your trip, such as a linen button-down shirt, an easy dress, or a simple tank top. Rewearing your pieces doesn’t mean repeating the same outfit; it means reinventing it. Swap sandals for heels, add a different accessory, or try different color combinations to get the most mileages from your items without needing to packing more stuff.
What to Pack for a Beach Vacation
Dresses and Skirts
If there’s one category that does the most heavy lifting in a beach vacation wardrobe, it’s dresses and skirts.
Both require minimal effort, take up very little space in your suitcase, and instantly make you feel put together regardless of whether you’re heading to the beach, grabbing lunch, or going out to dinner. The key is choosing styles that feel relaxed enough for daytime but polished enough to transition into the evening with just a few simple additions like a bright lipstick or a bold necklace.
Don’t think of each dress or skirt as a single outfit. Think of each as a base piece that can be styled multiple ways depending on your shoes, accessories, and layering.
When packing, I like to bring 2–3 lightweight dresses and a skirt that can be styled multiple ways throughout my trip. I like to pack at least 2 tank tops per skirt to create an entirely new look.
You can’t go wrong with a crisp white dress or white skirt and a new tan. Alternatively, a black dress with gold accessories is always extremely chic, even in warm temperatures.
A Matching Set
Similarly to a dress or skirt, a matching set is another no-brainer outfit that you can throw on with minimal effort and instantly look put together. And bonus, you can always rewear the bottoms another day with another top.
There are tons of options for matching sets depending on what you’re looking for. Opt for something more casual like a linen shirt and matching shorts for the day, or try a mini skirt with a matching top, or pants and matching top for nighttime.
Linen Pants or Shorts
A pair of linen pants or shorts strike the perfect balance between relaxed and polished, making them ideal for everything from a morning coffee run to an impromptu casual dinner after a day in the sun.
Linen is synonymous with warm-weather dressing because it’s breathable, effortless, and looks even better with a few wrinkles (making it perfectly suited for travel!). A lightweight pair of linen pants can easily be thrown over a swimsuit during the day, then styled with a tank top and elevated sandals for the evening. Depending on personal preference, a pair of linen shorts offers the same versatility. Either way, sticking to a neutral tone like white, beige, or black ensures that your bottoms will pair seamlessly with every top you’ve packed.
Tank Tops
I always pack several tank tops for any summer trip. They’re simple, lightweight, and incredibly easy to style. Wear your tank tops with linen pants, skirts, or shorts, or try one layered under a button-down or lightweight sweater when needed.
A few well-fitting tank tops can anchor nearly every outfit you wear on your trip. These tanks from GAP hug the body without feeling too tight, and come in several colors.
A Lightweight Layer
It’s always a good idea to pack a lightweight layer for some added warmth, even for a beach vacation. You want something breathable for sunny days, but substantial enough to throw on if the weather forecast changes and temperatures dip. Two of the best options to pack are a linen button-down and a lightweight sweater. Both are effortless, polished, and easy to style.
A linen button-down shirt is lightweight and airy. It can work double-duty as a swimsuit cover-up during the day and a relaxed top layered over a tank or dress at night. Opt for an oversized fit in white for maximum versatility and an effortless, coastal feel.
A lightweight sweater is equally important, especially for breezy mornings, sunset walks, or overly air-conditioned spaces. Look for a breathable knit in cotton to stay comfortable without overheating. Draped over your shoulders or worn with linen pants or a skirt, it adds a soft, elevated layer that still feels appropriate for warm-weather destinations.
Swim & Beachwear
I’m not one to go overboard on packing swimwear for a beach vacation. I usually pack two swimsuits and rotate between them throughout the trip. This way, one can dry during the day while I wear the other.
A chic cover-up is equally important, not just for the beach, but as a true extension of your wardrobe. The best ones can double as an outfit, whether that’s a lightweight dress, an oversized button-down, or a simple skirt.
Investing in an elevated bathing suit cover-up such as this wrap dress or this lightweight dress allows you to easily and stylishly go from breakfast to beach to shopping and dinner without ever changing. You’ll also feel more polished and put together than wearing mismatched shorts and a random old tee.
Other essentials for long beach days: a woven beach tote, sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, a good book, and a beach towel. (All hotels and most vacation rentals have beach towels; don’t waste suitcase space packing one unless you’re driving to your beach destination!)
A note on dry bags: I typically don’t pack a dry bag for my bathing suit unless I’m going into the water the same day I’m leaving. They’re a good option to separate a damp suit from dry clothes in your suitcase, but not essential.
Shoes
Shoes are where it’s always easy to overpack, but in reality, you only need a small, thoughtful rotation.
For most beach trips, I stick to packing three pairs of shoes: a comfortable flat sandal for walking, an elevated sandal or low heel for evenings, and a casual option like flip flops for the hot sand or pool.
If I’ll be working out or going on nature walks, I’ll also pack my sneakers.
The best shoes are ones that are both functional and stylish. These flat sandals from Margaux are always a warm-weather favorite; they’re comfortable from the get-go and the ankle strap allows me to walk for blocks without worrying about my shoes slipping off my feet.
For a low heel option, I love these block heels. I own them in gold, and the metallic is a fun neutral that feels special and fun for a fancy beachside dinner.
For the pool and beach, these minimalist flip flops feel more elevated than rubber ones, making them an excellent option for lunch and dinner, too.
Accessories
A few well-chosen accessories can completely transform even the simplest outfit, making your wardrobe feel more varied without adding bulk to your suitcase.
I like to keep things minimal but intentional. A woven tote or straw bag is essential for the beach, but it also works just as well for a casual lunch or walking through town. A smaller bag, like a simple crossbody or shoulder bag, is perfect for evenings when you want something more compact.
Sunglasses are non-negotiable for me, as is a packable hat or visor. They both add a chic element to your look but also offer practical sun protection. We love pieces that provide style and function!
Any jewelry should feel effortless and hold up in water, especially if you will be wearing any in the pool or ocean. For nighttime, a chunky bangle bracelet is an easy way to add a statement without looking too done up for the locale.
A silk scarf is always a fun outfit addition. It’s small, easy to pack, and incredibly versatile. You can wear it in your hair, tie it onto your bag, or even style it as a top or around your shoulders for a bit of added interest. I love bringing one with bright colors to inject some personality into otherwise neutral outfits.
The goal with accessories is not to overdo it, but to choose a few pieces that elevate the easy basics that you’ve packed.
Toiletries & Beauty Essentials
When it comes to toiletries for a beach vacation, I take a very pared-back approach. Warm weather and time spent by the water is the perfect opportunity to lean into a more relaxed beauty routine.
I focus on the basics: skincare that keeps my skin hydrated and protected, a few everyday makeup staples, and products that embrace my natural hair texture rather than fighting it.
Sunscreen is, of course, essential. I always bring SPF for my face and sunscreen for my body. Beyond that, a lightweight moisturizer, cleanser, and a simple makeup routine (tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a hydrating lip gloss) are usually all I pack.
For hair, I lean into low-maintenance styling. I either embrace any natural texture with a curl cream and air drying, or like to pull my hair into a low, slicked-back bun. Beach vacations are definitely when doing less actually looks better.
Keeping your beauty routine simple not only saves space in your bag, but also allows you to fully embrace that effortless, sun-kissed feeling that defines a perfect beach getaway.
In my opinion, the best beach vacation packing list is a minimalist one. By focusing on versatile essentials like dresses, tank tops, linen pieces, a lightweight layer, and a few key accessories, you can create multiple effortless outfits without overpacking. Stick to a cohesive color palette, prioritize breathable fabrics, and choose pieces you can rewear. This will help you to get the most out of every item in your suitcase.
This streamlined approach to beach vacation packing not only saves space, but also makes getting dressed feel easy and intuitive, so you can spend less time planning outfits and more time enjoying your trip.
