In partnership with Bliss and Her Campus Media. All opinions are my own.
A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to fly to New York City to be a part of HerConference 2018. HerConference is a two-day conference featuring panels with speakers who all shared advice on entrepreneurship, social, and careers in media to gen z and young millennial women who are about to finish or just graduated from college.
Although I don’t fall into that category, it was really cool to be there as more of an ambassador for Bliss and Her Campus Media; conferences like this definitely didn’t exist when I was a new college grad! There were so many eager young women super excited to motivate and kick start their career after listening to panels that included topics like these:
- How to Kickstart Your Career in Marketing
- A Day in the Life: Entry-Level Editiorial Positions
- How to Break Into a Career in Tech
- Is Working at a Start-up Right for You?
- What is a Career in PR Really Like?
My 21-year-old self would have exploded hearing all of these topics. Sure, when I was in grad school I learned the practical things of PR like “how to write a press release” or “what is a pitch?” But to be honest, I didn’t really know the day-to-day tasks a publicist. (This led to a very short stint in a PR agency for me; it just wasn’t my thing.) So panels like these, I think, are really important for young women as they start their careers, to learn about not only what they are interested in, but other options that they may have not even heard of or considered. We go to school, we learn about the jobs we learn about, but the truth is, there are so many other options that you don’t really know about until you’re already at a company seeing its inner workings.
Outside of the speaker events, there was a “Lady Cave” featuring different brands including one of my personal favorite skin card brands, Bliss. I am a long-time fan of the tongue-in-cheek, playful brand, which just recently rebranded. They gave away one of my favorite, their Lemon & Sage Body Butter. If you’re going to get one thing from them, get this. It’s thick but not greasy and it smells divine!
They also had the cutest interactive displays. One featured a bathtub full of fake lemons and then another was a pink wonderland with a hanging bubble swing. Of course, in typical millennial form, everyone had to take photos with both for the ‘gram.
The theme of this year’s conference was “OMW” – for on my way. It was so inspiring seeing these young women excited to break into new careers, and they served as a reminder to always keep your curiosity and spark for life. Thanks for having me attend HerConerence 2018, HerCampus Media!
