This month’s beauty obsessions post is all about the best hair products for a long bob – and one tool – I cannot live without. Earlier this month I visited my salon to brighten up my blonde ombre locks. I was in much need of a warm weather refresh. Don’t you just love that feeling when you exit the salon with new hair? It’s almost like I can hear music playing once I open the doors to the outside world. I always feel amazing after a new cut or color! My visit to the salon got me thinking about all of favorite products that I use when I’m home, since I don’t have a hair stylist on call. (Although that would be pretty awesome).
You’re not going to see any daily shampoos or conditioners on here for a couple of reasons. First being that I don’t wash my hair daily and second being that I’m not too picky with either as long as my hair feels clean. I’ve used everything from Kerastase to Pantene and if I ever find an “oh my god, can’t live without” shampoo or conditioner, I’ll be sure to share them. But, I do use a lot of other products to keep my hair bright, textured, and healthy, and I actually think those tend to be harder to find than a good shampoo or conditioner.
Here are the best hair products for a long bob, or medium length hair:
R & Co Acid Wash – Like I mentioned above, I do not wash my hair daily. It’s short and over time I’ve found that it gets less greasy than it used to. In lieu of washing, I’ve encountered an addiction to dry shampoo (more on that later). If you use dry shampoo regularly you’ll notice that after awhile you can start to see some light buildup in your hair. Usually this can be fixed with a quick shampoo, but if I need some extra help I use this cleansing rinse from R&Co. Think of this as a mild exfoliant for your scalp, getting rid of any residue left over from any dry shampoo. You use the bottle tip to dispense product close to the scalp, then massage it into your head. It’s cool to the touch, so it’s really refreshing, and your scalp is left nice, clean, and build-up free. This is a newer hair product discovery that I’ve grown to love. I think that rinses like this are becoming more popular but still really underrated even though they work.
R & Co Sunset Blvd Purple Shampoo – I have naturally dark, dark, brown hair, and my blonde ends can tend to get a little orange if I don’t properly care for them. One a week, I apply this purple shampoo to the ends and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off. This prevents my hair from turning brassy and allows me to go longer between color appointments. Technically it’s gentle enough for daily use, so when I have a long trip, this is the only shampoo I pack. This way, I don’t have to worry about missing a week and messing up my hair, but it won’t hurt it, either.
Living Proof Restore Treatment Mask – Speaking of blonde ends, there’s nothing worse to me than dry brittle hair. It’s really important to me to keep my hair healthy, regardless of the color, and so when my hair needs a little R&R I use this treatment mask. I’ll apply it to the blonde ends, where I experience the most dryness, and leave it on for 5 minutes or so while I shave my legs. I’m a big fan of a lot of Living Proof products, but as far as in-shower items from them, this is my absolute favorite because you can see instant results. My hair looks and feels more hydrated immediately after rinsing it off.
Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer – Okay, so this thing is a SPLURGE. I’ll put that out there right now. But I have a ton of hair, and it’s thick, so even though it’s short it still takes forever to dry with a normal dryer. Sure, it can be done, but in the mornings when I’m rushing (aka always) I need something to work fast. I received this dryer as a Christmas present, so I didn’t actually buy this, but it’s totally worth the investment for thick hair. I can dry my hair in less than 10 minutes. We’re talking completely dry, people. I don’t want to sell you something you don’t need, so if you don’t have lots of hair or thick hair, then honestly you probably don’t need this. But for me this is a total-game changer when it comes to getting ready. This hair dryer delivers super hot, high air but won’t burn or fry anything, which is something I’ve experienced with other dryers.
Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo – This is my addiction and hands down my most frequently used item in my bathroom other than my toothbrush. Having dark hair, I have always had issues with dry shampoo because it would never blend in and leave my hair with a weird gray tint. And truthfully, I kind of think dry shampoo can have a weird smell. I have tried so many dry shampoo products over the years. While I have a couple of other favorites for specific uses, this takes the cake on all-around winner. A spray nozzle makes it easy to apply, it smells delicious, and it really soaks up oil. A little goes a long way and it doesn’t leave any weird, heavy feeling that you can get with dry shampoo. Even on days when I wash my hair, I like to add this in for some grit and texture. For all you brunettes out there, Drybar does actually make a tinted brown version of this, but I prefer this one because that one leaves hands brown and kind of gets all over. Sometimes it’s better to stick to the OG!
Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast – This is a new found favorite of mine. Boy, is it good. I did a couple of Insta Stories showing the before and after of this product (if you’re not following me on Instagram, you should be!) and the results are incredible. Just for proof, here’s a quick before and after shot using this spray. After using dry shampoo near my roots, I spray this volume spray all around for that perfect, lived-in look. You can use this on straight or wavy hair, so it’s a really good product for any kind of styling for fuller, textured hair.
Here’s my hair normal, as is, with a little bit of wave in it already from the day before:
And here it is (the left side only) with the spray. I promise you I did absolutely nothing else to the left side of this photo other than spray with the Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast spray and use my fingers to style it a little bit. Nothing. Else. It’s magic.
Oribe Après Beach – If I don’t have time to style my hair straight or fully curl it, I use this beach spray from Oribe and dry my hair with a diffuser. My hair can get pretty wild, so if I need to, I’ll curl a couple of small sections here and there after diffusing just so that it’s a little more Carrie Bradshaw and a little less lion mane. Unlike other beach wave sprays, this one leaves zero crunch. And when I say zero I mean NADA. To me, that’s the selling point to any beach spray, because I want my waves to look natural rather than plastic-y and uncomfortable. It has the most amazing smell, and a little goes a long way. I can’t even remember when I bought this bottle and it’s still pretty full. (I know this post is all about the best hair products for a long bob, but I used this when I had longer hair and you basically get mermaid locks.)
So there you have it! These are what I think are the best hair products for a long bob, or at least for my hair and texture. Any holy-grail hair care products you can’t live without? Let me know; I always love discovering new things! (I think I may have been a hair stylist in a past life with my obsession for all things hair).
