I know it’s only February and we still have about a month to go until it’s spring, but I’m already thinking about warmer weather. I always start any look with a pair of jeans and so today I’m sharing spring denim trends that I hope you’ll love.
Once I have a couple of on-trend spring denim pieces in my closet, then I can build the rest of my wardrobe for the season. First a denim update, then a spring shoe update! 🙂
Here’s what I plan on picking up for March and beyond.
High Rise/Straight Leg
This isn’t necessarily a new trend, but it’s definitely not going anywhere. Mom jeans are still in. Over time, I’ve found myself reaching less for my skinny jeans and more for straight leg cropped styles like this pair I’m wearing by AG Jeans. I love a straight ankle length because it’s really the perfect style to show off shoes. I love how these look with a heel bootie. This pair is such a great medium wash and so I took them to NYFW because I couldn’t wait to wear them.
Let’s also give a shout out to the rise on these babies. I honestly don’t know how I ever lived in low rise jeans. For one, higher rises are much more slimming, but if you don’t feel comfortable tucking in a shirt, you can wear it outside of the jeans and cover your tummy. Dare I say they are even more comfortable since you never have to worry about continually pulling them up?
Short girl hack: The jeans in these photos came with a raw hem so I actually cut about 2 inches from the bottom to have them hit me just above the ankle. Look for raw hem style you can cut to get a custom length (and save on the tailor).
Dark Denim
Extremely faded light washes are always going to be “in” for spring due to their airy nature, but dark denim is making a comeback. A dark, clean pair of jeans like these from Frame goes well with a crisp cotton statement sleeve top and a pair of slide-on flat sandals.
Baggy Jeans
When I say baggy jeans are having a moment, I don’t necessarily mean that dumpy jeans are a thing. I just mean more relaxed styles and wider leg fits that are generally looser throughout the whole body and leg. Try these roomy destructed straight leg jeans or go retro in these wide leg crops. Comfort finally meets fashion in jeans that have more space but are still polished.
Pastel-Colored Denim
Pastel denim for spring kind of reminds me of that part in The Devil Wear Prada where Miranda Priestly says florals for spring are groundbreaking. Pastel seems more than appropriate for this time of year and therefore not really surprising. This trend has a way of coming in and out of style over the years. Needles to say, it’s one of the spring denim trends for 2018. This year I’m going to pair pastel bottoms like these pretty pink ones by Vince with a top in the same color for a totally monochrome look. (I actually already have the perfect shirt in mind: this light pink Splendid V-neck! How cute, right?)
In case you couldn’t spot the overarching spring denim trend here – it’s all about the ankles this season. Whether you’re wearing a high rise dark denim or a pastel wide fit, one thing is for certain – those ankles should be out and ready to see the sun for some color!
