Let’s talk facial sunscreen. There are a lot of options out there, and it can be overwhelming. Without overcomplicating anything, here are my current top four facial sunscreen picks, broken down by category.
Also, a friendly reminder that you should wear sunscreen every single day, not just in the summer. Here’s why:
- UVA and UVB rays are present even when it’s cloudy
- UVA and UVB rays can still penetrate through glass, even if you’re inside
- Sunscreen prevents premature aging
- Sunscreen prevents dark spots and hyperpigmentation
Note that I have combination skin, and these are the products that work for me. I am not a dermatologist.
My Top Facial Sunscreen Picks
Best Tinted Facial Sunscreen
For days when I want to go makeup-free but don’t want to look like I am, I reach for EltaMD’s UV Clear Tinted facial sunscreen. The universally flattering tint blends to match skin tones to provide an even complexion while offering sun protection.
Along with active UV blocking ingredients (it’s a chemical and physical SPF) it contains skin care ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration and niacinamide to prevent breakouts.
EltaMD is officially recognized by the Skin Cancer Foundation, and although they make a variety of sunscreens, this is my favorite from the brand.
Price: $39 for 1.7 oz
SPF Level: 46
Best Makeup Primer Sunscreen
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is hands down my favorite makeup primer SPF. It’s a clear, gel formula that glides on super easily and absorbs so quickly, you may forget you applied it.
Although the clear formula looks like Vaseline or Carmex, it is not greasy at all, and actually leaves somewhat of a velvety finish.
This sunscreen also protects against blue light, harmful rays that are emitted through everyday electronic devices like your phone and computer screen.
Price: $34 for 1.7 oz
SPF Level: 40

Best Overall Everyday Facial Sunscreen
If you’re looking for a solid, everyday sunscreen, try Sunday Riley Light Hearted Sunscreen.
This facial sunscreen has a very nice finish to it, and despite a light pink hue, blends seamlessly into skin.
Since Sunday Riley is a skin care brand, you can bet this SPF packs some skin care benefits along with UV protection. Turmeric, one its main ingredients, helps improve the appearance of surface redness and packed with antioxidants.
Price: $35 for 1.5 oz
SPF Level: 30
Best Drugstore Facial SPF
If you’re looking for a slightly more wallet-friendly but still effective facial sunscreen, try Bliss Block Star Invisible Sunscreen. I have used Bliss on and off for years, and always recommend them as one of my favorite affordable skin care brands.
Similar to the EltaMD sunscreen, this SPF is also tinted, making it a great choice for darker complexions and makeup-free days.
Price: $24 for 1.4 oz
SPF Level: 30
