How To: Make a Pantsuit Feel Fresh

Every now and then I’ll embrace the head to toe matching set. And when I saw this red pantsuit, I knew I wanted to shoot it and share it with you.

I love a matching set for three reasons: you can wear it as a set, you can wear the blazer with something, and you can wear the pants with something. It’s literally 3 outfits in one. And you know I love a piece (or in this case, two!) where I can get a lot of mileage.

Want to know a secret? You can turn classic (or “boring,” if you really feel that way) pieces into something fresh – you just need to know how to do it.

Start with the Classic(s)

Theory has long been a brand I’ve admired for well-tailored women’s pieces. Their suits are cut perfectly to fit a woman’s body all while maintaining that ease of a man’s two-piece suit.

Now look, I’m not going to sugar coat anything for you here; Theory is a splurge brand. But if you’re going to splurge on clothing, whatever it is better fit you dang good. The blazer in this pantsuit set has a contemporary, slightly fitted shape without being too tight or too baggy. AKA, it’s not going to be out of style come next year, or the year after. It’s just a slick, clean silhouette.

The same thing goes for the matching pants. A skinny cigarette leg has always been in style. If you don’t believe be, just Google the phrase “Audrey Hepburn pants” and take a look at the images. Timeless!

Size note: I took my normal size 4 in both pieces.

Make it Fresh

I used to think that if I was going to splurge on something, it had to be black because it went with everything. Ditch this idea immediately. Want to know why? Because you’re going to end up with a closet full of so much black on account of “it goes with everything” and never really be inspired by your closet.

I know you might be thinking that you need to play it safe with black if you’re going to invest in a nice pantsuit set, but that’s where the fun is! Given that this set features two classic fits (with a pretty classic color, if you ask me) – just TRUST when I say you’re good with this look for years to come.

I then opted out of a traditional pump and made the look more “of the moment” with trendy dad sneakers. These Aldo sneakers set me back way less than the suit set (currently on major sale and under $50) and I won’t feel guilty if they go out of style next year.

Instead of a fitted tee under my blazer, I ditched it; the result was a little edgy and unexpected styling detail.

Finally, in keeping with the sporty trend of my sneaks, I finished everything with this white Marc Jacobs bag. The body of the bag is leather, but tonal coated white hardware and a nylon strap adds athletic flare. It’s super fun for any daytime look.

There you have it! Splurge on the timeless pieces. Look for cuts and fits that will stand the test of time, and then buy it in a fun color and add on-trend accessories.
