Black Velvet Pants: An Understated Holiday Outfit

If you saw this recent post then you’ll see that I love sparkle. During the holidays it’s socially acceptable to go big or go home on everything shiny, so I fully embrace it despite the fact that the rest of the year I’m fairly low-key.

If a full-on gold sequin dress isn’t your thing, maybe this understated holiday look is up your alley. I clearly don’t know moderation – I’m either in a glitter party or I’m in black. shrugs shoulders

These cropped pants by 7 For All Mankind go above and beyond for the holiday season since they’re velvet, but they’re not over the top. I particularly love the silhouette on these black velvet pants because I’m a huge fan of showing off my pair of one-too-many-shoes. There’s just slightly flared at the bottom without being too much and I love the look of this instead of a traditional straight leg.

However, as a 5’4” person I can’t really get away with these kinds of pants unless I’m wearing a heel. So, I put on these sock booties by Jeffrey Campbell. (FYI – you can totally wear these pants at any height but I personally feel like I need some oomph in these styles of pants). I’m obsessed with them! I recently shot a dress (coming soon) with these same booties and the look is equally as cute as this one. They’re so versatile and really go with anything while giving your outfit some edge. Side note: they’re available in multiple colors and only $125.

Some people aren’t into dresses for the holidays, and that’s totally cool. I personally love a dress because I’m lazy, and putting one on means that I only have to generally think about one thing. But, if I had to opt for a holiday alternative, it would absolutely be black velvet pants. I’ve had a velvet obsession lately, and if you missed this post I rounded up 15 velvet items under $100. The truth is, if you have velvet pants (or anything, for that matter) then you don’t really have to worry about anything else. Let the cozy texture to the talking.

Instead of my traditional slouchy sweater, I opted for this amazing statement sleeve sweater because I wanted this look to be a bit more polished for dinner or a holiday party. I adore that the sleeves start “normal” at the top and then have the fun exaggerated balloon silhouette at the bottom. Super fun! It’s a bit of an investment but it’s 100% pure cashmere so you’re getting what you pay for here. The gray and black keeps this outfit super neutral so that you can wear it day into night. My recommendation is to throw on a red lip if you’re going out after work – it’ll totally pump up the outfit!
